Quicken Classic runs on Windows 11, and the version to buy is Deluxe at $6.99 a month billed annually unless you track investments, in which case Premier at $7.99 is the one worth the extra dollar. The two things that catch people out are S mode, which blocks the installer outright, and old perpetual copies like Quicken 2016 or 2017, which Quicken discontinued years ago and no longer patches at all.

Last updated August 31, 2026. Prices and system requirements below were read from Quicken's own support and pricing pages in August 2026.

Most of the traffic to this question comes from two very different people. One just bought a Windows 11 machine and wants to know which Quicken to purchase. The other has a boxed copy of Quicken from 2013 or 2017 sitting on an old PC and wants to know whether it will survive the move. The answers are not the same, so this covers both, and it ends with how to get your data out either way.

Does Quicken work on Windows 11?

Yes. Quicken's published system requirements list both Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported operating systems for Quicken Classic. The current subscription releases install and run normally on a standard Windows 11 machine. The requirements are light: a minimum of 1 GB of RAM and 450 MB of free disk space, or 1.5 GB if .NET is not already installed.

There are two carve-outs in that same document. Quicken states it is "Not compatible with Windows 11 in S mode," and separately that "Arm-based Windows 11 is supported through built-in emulation." So a normal Intel or AMD laptop is fine, a Snapdragon-based Copilot+ PC runs Quicken under emulation rather than natively, and a machine still in S mode will not install it at all.

Is Quicken compatible with Windows 11 in S mode?

No. Quicken's system requirements say plainly that it is not compatible with Windows 11 in S mode, and the same restriction applies to Windows 10 in S mode. S mode limits a machine to software from the Microsoft Store, and Quicken Classic is not distributed there, so the installer never gets to run.

You can switch S mode off through the Microsoft Store for free, and Quicken installs normally afterward. Understand what you are agreeing to first: Microsoft treats leaving S mode as permanent, and there is no supported way to switch it back on. That is worth knowing before you make the change on a machine you bought specifically for its locked-down behavior.

Which Quicken versions run on Windows 11?

Officially, only the current Quicken Classic subscription releases. Quicken's discontinuation policy states that "Versions of Quicken released before the subscription version were discontinued and no longer receive support," which covers every boxed perpetual copy people still have on a shelf. Quicken 2016 for Windows and Mac was discontinued on April 30, 2019, and Quicken 2017 on April 30, 2020.

Discontinued does not necessarily mean the program refuses to launch, and plenty of old copies do still open on newer Windows. It means Quicken has stopped supporting it, and the practical consequences are specific. Online bill pay stops. Downloading and importing financial data stops. Stock quote downloads stop. And Quicken states that "we do not provide any software updates or patches, including security patches, to discontinued products."

Will Quicken 2013 run on Windows 11?

Quicken does not support it and will not help you if it fails. Quicken 2013 predates the subscription model by several years, so it falls squarely under the discontinued policy: no updates, no security patches, and no connected services. Some people do get old releases to launch on Windows 11, but installers from that era were built for a different Windows and can fail outright on a modern machine.

Treat a copy that old as a data archive rather than software you are going to keep using. It cannot download a transaction from any bank, so every entry has to be typed in by hand, and running unpatched financial software on an internet-connected PC is a poor trade for saving a subscription. The useful thing it can still do is open your file long enough to export it, which is covered below.

How do I get Quicken 2017 to work on Windows 11?

Install it from your original media or download, run it as administrator, and expect the connected features to be dead. Quicken 2017 was discontinued on April 30, 2020, so online services were switched off then and no amount of configuration brings them back. If the installer refuses, running it in compatibility mode for an older Windows release is the usual workaround, though Quicken does not support or document it.

The honest read is that the effort only makes sense for one purpose: opening the file to get the data out. Once the online services are gone, Quicken 2017 is a manual register, and there are free programs that do that job on Windows 11 without a decade of missing security patches. If your goal is to keep using Quicken properly, you are buying a current subscription rather than reviving a 2017 copy.

Which Quicken should I buy for Windows 11?

Deluxe for most people, Premier if you hold investments, Business & Personal if you have rental property or Schedule C income. Starter is worth avoiding for a reason that is easy to miss: Quicken's Data Access Guarantee, which lets you keep viewing and editing your data after a subscription lapses, covers Deluxe and above but not Starter.

The gap between Deluxe and Premier is one dollar a month, and what it buys is investment-side depth: Morningstar Portfolio X-Ray and the Lifetime Planner, both of which are Windows-only features that Mac buyers do not get at any tier. If you only have a checking account, a couple of cards and a mortgage, Deluxe covers it and Premier will sit unused. We compare the two in detail in Quicken Deluxe vs Premier.

How much does Quicken cost for Windows 11?

Quicken Classic Deluxe is $6.99 a month billed annually, Premier is $7.99 and Business & Personal is $10.99, which works out to roughly $83.88, $95.88 and $131.88 for the first year. Those are the prices Quicken publishes on its own pricing comparison page as of August 2026.

Read the fine print, because it changes the math. Quicken states that "All offers are for the first year only when you order directly from Quicken by September 27, 2026, 11:59 PT," and that at the end of the term the subscription "will automatically renew at the then-current rates." Quicken does not publish what that renewal rate is anywhere, and the struck-through figures on its own page imply a Deluxe list price closer to $11.65 a month. Budget for year two being meaningfully more than year one.

One other thing the comparison sites get wrong often enough to mention: Quicken is not an Intuit product. Intuit sold it in 2016, and Aquiline Capital Partners has owned it since October 2021. Any review still crediting Quicken's "Intuit backing" has not been updated in years, which is a reasonable signal about the rest of that review.

How do I move Quicken to a new Windows 11 computer?

Install Quicken on the new machine, sign in with the same Quicken ID, then copy your data file across and open it. The data file is the .QDF, and it does not live in the program folder, so copying the installed application does nothing. Back up from inside Quicken first using File, then Backup and Restore, and move that backup rather than the live file.

Your subscription follows your Quicken ID rather than the hardware, so there is no separate transfer or deactivation step to worry about. The full walkthrough, including where Quicken hides the file and what to check once it opens, is in our guide to moving Quicken to a new computer.

How do I get my data out of an old Quicken before I upgrade?

Export QIF, one account at a time. In Quicken for Windows, open the account you want, then go to File, then File Export, then QIF File. Set the output path, confirm the account, set a start and end date, tick the transaction types you want, and save the .qif. Every Quicken Classic release for Windows can do this, including Deluxe, Premier and Business & Personal.

Two traps account for most of the mistakes here. Quicken defaults the export to whichever register is currently open, so people regularly end up with the wrong account inside the file, which is why you open the right account before touching the menu. And a lapsed subscription does not lock you out: Quicken drops into a restricted mode where connected services stop, but the file still opens and still exports. The step-by-step version is in exporting a QIF file from Quicken.

If the old copy will not launch at all, the fallback is rebuilding from your bank rather than from Quicken. Download the account history from your bank in whatever format it offers, and where all you have left is a stack of statements you can turn the PDF statements into a spreadsheet and work from that. It is slower than a clean QIF export, but it recovers history that a dead installer has otherwise locked away.

What are the alternatives to Quicken on Windows 11?

Moneyspire at $59.99 one time and Moneydance are the two serious buy-once desktop options, and both run on Windows alongside Mac and Linux. GnuCash and Money Manager EX are free, and Money Manager EX is the free one that still exports QIF. All four keep the data file on your own disk, which is the thing subscription refugees are usually actually looking for.

What none of them match is Quicken's bank coverage, so check that your credit union connects before you commit. We compare the whole category, prices and export formats included, in our roundup of personal finance software for Windows.

Getting Quicken data into QuickBooks

If the move is to QuickBooks rather than to another personal finance app, there is a step in between. QuickBooks does not read QIF in any version, and QuickBooks Online has no Quicken file import at all, so the QIF you exported has to be converted into a QBO Web Connect file first. The converter at the top of this page does that, and it writes deterministic transaction IDs so re-importing the same file does not post everything twice.

Do it account by account and reconcile the ending balance after each import. Three numbers should agree: the transaction count in the Quicken register for your date range, the count in the converted file, and the closing balance. If they do, the export was complete and you can retire the old copy with confidence.
