Quicken Home and Business vs QuickBooks for Small Business
No account needed for your first conversions. We never store your bank login.
Quicken Home and Business, sold today as Quicken Classic Business & Personal, is a personal finance program with invoicing attached: one user, a categorized register rather than a general ledger, no payroll, and no accountant login, at $10.99 a month. QuickBooks Online is double entry accounting built for a company and starts at $38 a month. If your business is side income you report on Schedule C or E, Quicken is usually enough. If you invoice regularly, pay anyone, or hand your books to an accountant, QuickBooks is the right tool.
Last updated July 2026. This comparison is written for the person who already owns Quicken, already tracks a business in it, and is trying to work out whether the upgrade is worth $300 or more a year. Both products are good at what they were designed for. The mistake is assuming they were designed for the same job.

Is Quicken good for small business?
It is good for a small business that is really one person and a bank account. Quicken tracks business income and expenses, separates them from personal spending, sends invoices, and prints the Schedule C and Schedule E numbers your tax preparer wants. What it does not do is behave like accounting software: no general ledger, no accounts payable, no accountant collaboration, and no audit trail an outside reviewer would accept.
The practical test is who else touches your numbers. If nobody does, and your tax return is a Schedule C attached to a personal 1040, Quicken holds up for years. The moment a bookkeeper, a lender, a partner or an outside CPA needs to work in the file rather than read a printout, the single user design starts costing more in emailed exports than the QuickBooks subscription would.
What is the actual difference between Quicken and QuickBooks?
Quicken records where money went. QuickBooks records what happened to the business. In Quicken, a client payment is a deposit tagged to a category. In QuickBooks, that same payment closes an invoice, reduces accounts receivable, and posts to income, so the balance sheet stays true. That is what double entry buys you, and it is why a lender or an accountant asks for QuickBooks output rather than a Quicken report.
The difference shows up first in reporting. Quicken produces cash flow and category summaries. QuickBooks produces a profit and loss, a balance sheet and a statement of cash flows that tie to each other. If you have ever been asked for a balance sheet and had to build one in a spreadsheet, you have already met the limit of the register model.
Can Quicken Home and Business send invoices?
Yes. Quicken Classic Business & Personal creates branded invoices, tracks billable hours and expenses, and marks invoices paid when the deposit lands. What it lacks is the receivables machinery around them: no aging report you can hand to a collections process, no automatic reminders tied to terms, and no way for a second person to work the list. For a handful of invoices a month that trade off is fine.
Neither program will type your supplier bills for you either. If your bookkeeping is really a monthly stack of vendor PDFs, pulling the invoice line items into a spreadsheet before you touch any accounting software saves more hours than the choice between these two products does.
Is Quicken cheaper than QuickBooks?
Yes, by a wide margin. Quicken Classic Business & Personal is $131.88 a year at the rate advertised on quicken.com in August 2026. At the rates that took effect on August 1, 2026, QuickBooks Online Simple Start is $456 a year, Essentials is $1,020 and Plus is $1,680, before payroll or payments. That August increase added $120 a year to Essentials, $300 to Plus and $780 to Advanced, and only Simple Start escaped it.
Price alone rarely decides it, though. One hour a month of avoided cleanup at a bookkeeper's rate covers the difference between the two products. Look at the work each one creates rather than the invoice each one sends.
Can Quicken do payroll?
No. Quicken has no payroll module, no tax withholding calculation and no filing service. If you pay yourself as an S corp employee or have even one W-2 worker, you are running payroll somewhere else and re-entering the results in Quicken by hand. QuickBooks Online sells payroll as a paid add on that files federal and state taxes for you and posts to the books automatically.
Should landlords use Quicken or QuickBooks?
Landlords with a handful of doors are the one group Quicken still serves better. Rental tracking is built in, each property gets its own income and expense picture, and Schedule E comes out at the end of the year without extra setup. QuickBooks can do it with classes or customers, but you build that structure yourself. The tipping point is usually a property manager, a partner, or financed properties where a lender wants real statements. There is a longer breakdown in our Quicken vs QuickBooks for rental property comparison.
Can my accountant work in my Quicken file?
Not directly. Quicken is a single user desktop program with no accountant login, so collaboration means exporting reports, mailing a copy of the data file, or sharing a screen. QuickBooks Online gives an accountant a free seat with its own tools and an audit log. If you pay someone to close your books, that difference alone usually settles the decision.
What happens to my data if I cancel Quicken?
Under Quicken's Data Access Guarantee, Deluxe and higher plans keep view, edit, export and manual entry after a subscription lapses. Starter drops to read only. What stops is everything connected: bank downloads, quotes, mobile sync, support and updates. Your history stays readable, which matters if you plan to migrate rather than keep paying. We covered the details in what happens to Quicken data when a subscription expires.
How do I move my data if I switch to QuickBooks?
Export each business account from Quicken to a QIF file, convert the QIF to a QBO (Web Connect) file, and upload it in QuickBooks. QuickBooks cannot open a Quicken .QDF and never reads QIF, so the conversion is the whole trick. Transactions carry across; invoices, customers and unpaid balances get entered once at your cutover date. The full walkthrough is on our Quicken Home and Business to QuickBooks page, and the file itself is made with the QIF to QBO converter above.
Who should stay on Quicken?
Stay if your business is a single owner side income, you file a Schedule C or E, nobody else needs the file, and you like having household and business money in one place. That is a real, common situation, and paying four times as much for accounting features you will never open is not an upgrade. Quicken's investment tracking is also better than anything in QuickBooks, which matters if the same file holds your portfolio.
Who should switch to QuickBooks?
Switch when any of these become true: you have employees or contractors, you carry inventory, you bill enough that receivables need managing, a lender or investor wants real statements, or you pay a bookkeeper who is charging you to work around Quicken. The cost of staying is paid in cleanup hours, not in software fees, which is why the switch usually happens a year later than it should. If you are still weighing the wider question, our Quicken vs QuickBooks comparison covers the non business editions too, and is Quicken worth it in 2026 looks at the subscription itself.
