The best Banktivity alternative depends on why you are leaving. If it is the renewal bill ($83.88 to $131.88 a year at Banktivity's published rates), buy a one-time license: Moneydance at $65 or Moneyspire at $59.99. If you need Windows, pick Quicken Classic or Moneydance. If you want a modern web and phone app, Monarch at $99.99 a year or Copilot at $95 a year are the strongest picks.
Banktivity is a good Mac app with a narrow fit. It runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad only, it is sold as an annual subscription, and its Bronze and Silver tiers went up by $10 a year on renewal in September 2024. Those three facts explain nearly every search for a replacement. The good news is that Banktivity exports your data well, so switching is not a rebuild from scratch.
Which Banktivity alternative should you buy?
Start from the reason you are leaving, not from a list of features. Each objection points at a different product, and the prices below are what each vendor publishes for 2026.
| Software | Price | Platforms | Bank downloads | Reads a Banktivity QIF | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Banktivity (for reference) | $6.99, $8.99 or $10.99 a month billed annually | Mac, iPhone, iPad | Included | Not applicable | Apple-only households with investments and real estate |
| Moneydance | $65 one time; bank sync about $40 a year extra | Mac, Windows, Linux, plus companion phone apps | Moneydance+ add-on | Yes | Stopping the subscription while keeping a desktop ledger |
| Moneyspire | $59.99 one time; $49.99 upgrade keeps bank connection running | Mac, Windows, Linux, Chromebook | First year included | Yes | The lowest published price for a traditional Quicken-style program |
| Quicken Classic | Deluxe $6.99, Premier $7.99 a month billed annually, first year | Mac, Windows | Included | Yes | Deeper reports, planning and the largest bank network |
| Monarch | $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month; Plus $199.99 a year | Web, iPhone, iPad, Android | Included | No, CSV only | Couples who want a shared web and phone app |
| Copilot Money | $95 a year or $13 a month | iPhone, iPad, Mac, web | Included | No | Apple users who want a polished modern app |
Quicken's rates are promotional prices for new memberships bought direct through November 22, 2026, and renew at the then-current rate. Monarch Plus and Moneydance's bank sync add-on are optional upgrades, not required for the core program.
What is the best Banktivity alternative for Mac?
For most Mac users leaving Banktivity, Moneydance is the best alternative. It runs natively on macOS, costs $65 once instead of every year, imports the QIF file Banktivity exports, and exports QIF back out, so you are never locked in. If you want the closest match to Banktivity's investment depth instead, Quicken Classic for Mac is the stronger pick, at a subscription price similar to Banktivity's.
Moneydance's licensing is also generous for households: one personal license covers every computer you own, on any operating system, for any number of people in the household. Its weak points are an engineer's interface and plain reports. Use its free trial, which has no time limit and caps only hand-typed transactions at 100, to import a year of history before you buy. Full prices and the subscription trap to avoid are on our Moneydance pricing page.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Banktivity?
Yes. Moneyspire at $59.99 and Moneydance at $65 are one-time purchases, and either one costs less than a single year of Banktivity Bronze at $6.99 a month billed annually ($83.88). Over three years the gap grows: about $160 for Moneyspire with its bank connection kept on, about $185 for Moneydance with bank sync, against $251.64 for Banktivity Bronze and $395.64 for Gold.
| Three-year cost | Year 1 | Years 2 and 3 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banktivity Bronze | $83.88 | $167.76 | $251.64 |
| Banktivity Gold | $131.88 | $263.76 | $395.64 |
| Moneyspire, bank connection kept on | $59.99 | $99.98 | $159.97 |
| Moneydance license plus bank sync add-on | About $105 | About $80 | About $185 |
| Moneydance license, importing files yourself | $65 | $0 | $65 |
| Monarch Core, annual | $99.99 | $199.98 | $299.97 |
Moneyspire's renewal works by buying its next major upgrade at $49.99, which also keeps its cloud and bank connection services running. Banktivity figures use the vendor's per month rates multiplied by twelve; some directories still quote lower annual totals, so read the charge at checkout. We break the two buy-once options down in Moneyspire vs Banktivity.
Which Banktivity alternative works on Windows?
Moneydance, Moneyspire and Quicken Classic all run on Windows, and Moneydance and Moneyspire also run on Linux. Banktivity has no Windows version and no web app, so a household with one Windows PC cannot open the file at all. If a spouse, bookkeeper or future computer might be on Windows, that alone is a reason to switch before your next renewal date rather than after.
Of the three, Quicken Classic for Windows has the most features (Lifetime Planner, investment analysis and Business & Personal for rentals), Moneydance adds companion phone apps, and Moneyspire has the lowest published price plus Chromebook support. Our personal finance software for Mac comparison covers the cross-platform picks in more depth.
Is Quicken for Mac better than Banktivity?
Quicken Classic for Mac is better for investment detail, reports and bank coverage; Banktivity is better as a native Apple app with strong iPhone and iPad versions. Prices are close: Quicken Classic Deluxe is $6.99 a month billed annually for the first year, the same as Banktivity Bronze. The deciding question is usually whether you want Quicken's planning tools or Banktivity's Apple integration.
One caveat if you value portability: Quicken for Mac has not exported QIF since the 2007 version, while Banktivity exports QIF, CSV and TXF. Moving from Banktivity into Quicken is easy, but moving back out of Quicken Mac later is harder. We put the two through a full comparison in Banktivity vs Quicken.
Is Monarch a good Banktivity alternative?
Monarch is a good Banktivity alternative if you want a shared web and phone budget, and a poor one if you want a desktop ledger with years of history. Monarch Core costs $99.99 a year or $14.99 a month, covers a partner at no extra cost and runs in any browser, including on Windows. But it imports CSV only, so your Banktivity QIF history will not come across with its categories and splits intact.
The workable route is to start Monarch fresh from today's balances and keep the old history in a spreadsheet. If you need business reporting, Monarch Plus at $199.99 a year adds business income and expense tracking with P&L and tax-prep exports. The head-to-head is in Banktivity vs Monarch.
Can I move my Banktivity data to another app?
Yes. Banktivity 10 exports QIF, CSV and TXF. Use File, Export To, Quicken Format (QIF) and choose a date range; Moneydance, Moneyspire and Quicken Classic all import that QIF file. One catch from Banktivity's own documentation: QIF carries no currency, so if you select accounts in different currencies, Banktivity writes a separate QIF file per currency.
Export before your subscription lapses. Banktivity says your data is yours to keep and exportable whatever the state of your subscription, but doing it while everything still syncs is less stressful than doing it under a deadline. Reconcile one account in the new app against your last Banktivity statement before you cancel anything.
What should you do with the business accounts in your Banktivity file?
Send them to QuickBooks rather than to another personal finance app. Banktivity has no invoicing, payroll or double entry ledger, and neither do Moneydance, Moneyspire or Monarch Core. If a side business, freelance income or rentals run through the same file, your tax preparer will want those accounts in QuickBooks, and QuickBooks Online does not import QIF.
The fix is to export the business checking and card accounts from Banktivity as QIF, convert each file to a QuickBooks Web Connect .qbo file with the converter at the top of this page, and upload it through Bank transactions in QuickBooks. The converter checks that opening balance plus transactions equals the closing balance before you download, and stable transaction IDs mean an overlapping date range will not duplicate entries. The full walkthrough is on our Banktivity to QuickBooks page, and QIFQBO Starter is $49 for one month if you only need it for the switch.
Landlords are the other group who outgrow Banktivity's real estate tracking. Silver and Gold track a property as an asset, but once you have several units, tenants and owner statements, the rent roll belongs in dedicated property management software for landlords, with the bank activity flowing to QuickBooks for the books.
Who should stay on Banktivity?
Stay if everyone in the household is on Apple devices, you use the Silver investment and real estate tools or Gold's multi-currency accounts, and the annual price does not bother you. Banktivity's bank network of over 14,000 institutions and its iPhone and iPad apps are genuinely strong, and none of the buy-once alternatives match its mobile experience. Leave if the renewal, the Apple-only limit or a business that needs real books is the problem. Our Banktivity review covers the tiers in detail.
