Transaction Pro Importer for QuickBooks Online cannot read a QIF file. The QuickBooks Online edition accepts Excel (XLS, XLSX) and CSV only. The Windows desktop edition does read QIF, but it writes into QuickBooks Desktop, costs $199 or $299 per user up front, and Intuit is winding QuickBooks Desktop down. So if your file is a Quicken QIF export and your books live in QuickBooks Online, Transaction Pro is not the tool that finishes the job, whichever plan you buy.

QIFQBO is the alternative for that one specific case: it turns a QIF export into the .qbo Web Connect file that QuickBooks Online's own upload screen recommends above every other format. Upload the QIF, check that the opening balance, the debit total and the credit total reconcile, then download a .qbo file that QuickBooks accepts and matches against your register. No Windows install, no column mapping, no per-row monthly cap.

Below is an honest side by side of what each tool actually reads and writes, with pricing taken from each vendor's own pages. Transaction Pro genuinely wins for some jobs and this page says where. Last updated September 2026.

A real .qbo file QuickBooks accepts

Built for the QIF files Quicken and finance tools actually export, checked before it exports.

Reconciliation

Every total checked against your file

The converter adds up the transactions it parsed and matches that to your file total before you export, so nothing is silently dropped.

Web Connect

A genuine .qbo, not a renamed QIF

Valid OFX 1.02 with QuickBooks Web Connect headers. Online and Desktop import it as a standard bank feed.

QIF tags

Your QIF tags read for you

Date, payee, and amount are read straight from the QIF tags, so there is nothing to map and no layout to match.

Volume

A year of QIF files in one batch

Bulk upload for catch-up and cleanup work. Each file gets its own reconciliation check and its own exports.

Dates and amounts

Dates and amounts fixed for you

Mixed date formats, apostrophe years, currency symbols, and split lines in a QIF are cleaned up and summed before the .qbo is built.

Exports

Excel and CSV in the same download

One conversion, three files: the .qbo for QuickBooks, an XLSX to review, and a CSV for everything else.

How to convert your QIF to QuickBooks

Three steps. No column-mapping wizard.

1

Upload your QIF file

Drag in a .qif export from Quicken, your bank, or another finance tool. Any QIF type works.

2

Review the reconciled rows

Every transaction is parsed and checked against your file total. You see the rows before exporting.

3

Import into QuickBooks

Download the .qbo and import it as a Web Connect bank feed. Excel and CSV are in the same download.

What is the best Transaction Pro Importer alternative for QuickBooks Online?

It depends on the file you are holding. If your source is a QIF export from Quicken, QIFQBO is the alternative that fits, because it produces the .qbo Web Connect file QuickBooks Online recommends. If your source is a spreadsheet of invoices or bills, SaasAnt Transactions Online is the closer substitute at $25 to $100 a month.

Those two are not competing for the same job. Transaction Pro and SaasAnt both push rows into QuickBooks Online through Intuit's API, which is why they are strong at creating invoices, bills, checks and journal entries in bulk. A converter works differently: it hands you a bank feed file that QuickBooks treats like a download from your bank, so the transactions arrive in the For Review queue and match against what is already in the register. Pick by what you have and where it has to end up, not by feature count.

Does Transaction Pro Importer support QIF files?

Only in the QuickBooks Desktop edition, and only for banking data. Rightworks lists the desktop formats as Excel, TXT, CSV, Quicken (QIF, banking data only), Microsoft Money (OFX, banking data only), Access, SQL databases and ODBC sources. The QuickBooks Online edition of Transaction Pro is documented as accepting Excel (XLS or XLSX) and comma separated value files, and nothing else.

This catches people out regularly, because the two products carry almost the same name. Someone leaving Quicken reads that Transaction Pro imports QIF, subscribes to the QuickBooks Online plan, and then finds the upload screen will not take the file. The QIF support lives in a separate Windows program that writes to QuickBooks Desktop.

How much does Transaction Pro Importer cost?

For QuickBooks Online it is a subscription: Essentials $13 a month or $120 a year for one company and 200 rows of import a month, Growth $39 a month or $350 a year for three companies with unlimited import, and Premium $61 a month or $570 a year for five companies. For QuickBooks Desktop it is a one time purchase of $199 per user for the Importer, or $299 per user for the Importer, Exporter and Deleter bundle.

Two details are worth reading twice. The $13 Essentials plan is capped at 200 rows a month, which a single year of one checking account will usually blow through in one sitting, so the realistic QuickBooks Online entry price is the $39 Growth plan. And the desktop licence includes support for the first year only; after that it is $99 a year to keep chat, phone and email support active.

Why does transactionpro.com redirect to rightworks.com?

Because the product is now sold as Rightworks Transaction Pro. As of September 2026 the old transactionpro.com address returns a 301 permanent redirect to rightworks.com, and the pricing, product and support pages all live under the Rightworks domain. The software itself is still Transaction Pro Importer, Exporter and Deleter.

If you are comparing quotes or reading an older review, check the date on it. Prices and plan names changed with the move, so a figure from a 2024 roundup is unlikely to match what you will be charged now.

Can Transaction Pro import a Quicken file into QuickBooks Online?

No. The QuickBooks Online edition reads Excel and CSV only, so a .qif file will not open in it at all. There is no plan, tier or add on that changes this. The QIF support is a feature of the separate Windows desktop program, which imports into QuickBooks Desktop rather than QuickBooks Online.

The workaround people try is to convert the QIF to CSV first and import that. It works in the narrow sense that rows appear, but you lose the thing that makes a bank feed useful, which is covered a few questions down.

What file formats does QuickBooks Online accept for uploading transactions?

Intuit's manual upload screen accepts .qbo, .qfx, .ofx, .csv and .txt, and it recommends .qbo above the rest. The file must be in English and 350 KB or less, with up to 1,000 lines per upload. A CSV needs either three columns (date, description, amount) or four (date, description, credit, debit). QIF is not on the accepted list.

That last line is the whole reason this category of tool exists. Quicken's export is QIF, QuickBooks Online's import is not, and nothing Intuit ships bridges the two. If your file is large, split it by date range rather than trying to push one oversized upload through.

Is Transaction Pro Importer worth it for a single company file?

For a QuickBooks Desktop user doing bulk imports every month, $199 once is good value and hard to beat. For a QuickBooks Online user with one company, the maths is less kind: $39 a month is $468 a year for a tool you may only need during a migration, and the cheaper $13 plan stops at 200 rows a month.

Ask how many times you will run the import. A one off migration off Quicken is a job with an end date. An ongoing monthly close where you post hundreds of spreadsheet rows is a subscription you will actually use. Buying a per seat annual plan for a one week job is the most common way people overspend in this category.

Transaction Pro vs SaasAnt Transactions: which should you buy?

SaasAnt is usually the better buy for QuickBooks Online and Transaction Pro for QuickBooks Desktop. SaasAnt starts at $25 a month with a 30 day trial and no card required, reads Excel, CSV and IIF, and does import, export and delete on one plan. Transaction Pro's desktop licence is a one time $199 and reads more source types, including QIF and OFX.

Neither converts a QIF into a QuickBooks Online bank feed file, so if that is your job the comparison is beside the point. We keep a longer breakdown on the SaasAnt Transactions alternative page, including where SaasAnt is genuinely the right answer.

What happens if you convert a QIF to CSV and import that instead?

The rows land, but they arrive as manually entered transactions rather than as a bank feed, so QuickBooks will not match them against your existing register the way it matches a downloaded statement. You also inherit the CSV rules: three or four columns in a fixed shape, 350 KB, 1,000 lines, and a column mapping step you repeat for every file.

A .qbo file avoids all of that because QuickBooks treats it as Web Connect data from the bank. Transactions appear in For Review with the account, the date and the amount already understood, duplicate detection runs, and reconciliation behaves normally. That difference is why Intuit puts .qbo at the top of its own list.

Does Transaction Pro work on a Mac?

The QuickBooks Desktop edition is a Windows program, so a Mac user cannot run the version that reads QIF. The QuickBooks Online edition runs in a browser and is therefore Mac friendly, but that is the edition limited to Excel and CSV.

For Mac users this is the sharpest fork in the road. A browser based converter sidesteps it entirely, which is one of the more practical reasons people end up choosing one.

Is there a free trial of Transaction Pro Importer?

Rightworks offers a trial of Transaction Pro, and SaasAnt publishes a 30 day free trial that does not require a credit card to start. QIFQBO lets you convert three files with no account at all, so you can confirm the totals reconcile before you decide anything.

Whatever you trial, test it with your real file rather than a sample. Bank exports carry odd date formats, memo fields and split transactions, and those are exactly the things that break an import on the day you are relying on it.

Which Transaction Pro plan do accounting firms need?

The per company limits are the constraint rather than the row limits. The QuickBooks Online plans cover one, three and five companies at $13, $39 and $61 a month, and Rightworks sells separate firm tiers with ten company expansion packs for practices that need more. A firm running more than five client files will be on the firm pricing rather than the business plans.

If the recurring firm job is converting client QIF exports rather than posting spreadsheets, the cost shape is different again. Our bulk QIF to QBO converter page covers batch conversion for practices handling many client files at once.

How do you get a Quicken QIF file into QuickBooks Online?

Export the register from Quicken as a QIF, convert it to a .qbo Web Connect file, then use Bank transactions in QuickBooks Online, choose the account, select Link account and Upload from file, and pick the .qbo. The transactions arrive in For Review, where you accept or recategorize them like any bank download.

Two things to check before you upload. Make sure the file starts at least one day before the oldest transaction already in that QuickBooks account, so the overlap is visible and duplicates get caught. And keep each upload inside the 1,000 line limit by splitting long histories into date ranges. The step by step version is on QIF to QuickBooks Online.

Is Transaction Pro still the right choice if you are staying on QuickBooks Desktop?

If you are committed to QuickBooks Desktop and import regularly, yes, it is a reasonable buy at $199 once. It reads more source formats than anything else in this comparison, including QIF and OFX for banking data, and there is no monthly fee for the software itself.

The caveat is the platform, not the product. Intuit has been narrowing QuickBooks Desktop for several years, and a one time licence tied to a product with a shortening runway is worth thinking about before you buy a second seat.
